Tidal River and Offshore Training
The Tidal River Thames is a great way to see London and some of the magnificent views and to do this safely we offer a one day training course both Theory and practical boating. This is
the next step forward after the Inland Waterways Helming course. The tidal strecth of the Thames can appear daunting for those who have never tackled it before but with the correct
training it is perfectly safe and great fun!
We will teach you tidal times and tidal heights for specific dates and why you need to know this. as well as how the river flows from high to low water and vice versa and the affect this has on all types of boats. It is important to plan your journey taking into account the tidal stream and safe haven moorings en-route. The Rules of the Road on rivers are governed by the International Regulations for the prevention of Collision at Sea and knowledge of this is essential to avoid danger to your own boat and other river users.
We also cover the basic operation of VHF radio requirements for those who have yet to complete the RYA Short Range Certificate. Anyone can operate a Radio under supervision of a license holder. Alternatively attend RYA VHF Course. Chart reading and symbols are covered so you understand where you are on the river in relation to your passage. It is also importand to know navigation symbols and lights that other vessels may be showing especially at dusk, night time or in foggy conditions when it is imperative that your own boat is also using the correct lights.
On completing this course you will have the confidence to undertake passage planning along tidal rivers.
Assistance and advice in boat launching and boat transport offshore or on the Thames.
Thames Estuary and offhsore training is available on your own boat with a RYA Yachtsmaster Offshore Skipper to assist in safely planning your journey to coincide with the right time of the tides.
